History:

Pierre Paul Rubens, “Saint Roch appointed by Christ as patron of plague victims”, circa 1623, painting on canvas, Collegiate Church of Saint-Martin, Aalst.
Saint Roch, born in Montpellier, was one of the most famous saints of the plague victims.
After the death of his parents, he decided to go on a pilgrimage to Rome.
On the way, he healed the sick, especially the plague victims.
He ended up being contaminated in his turn and withdrew to a wood, where a dog brought him bread every day.
Miraculously, he recovered his health and returned to Montpellier. He would have died in the dungeon.
We recognize Saint Roch for his pilgrim equipment, the dog and his partially bare leg.
He kneels on a stone platform and next to him appears the Risen Christ.
Christ shows an angel who holds in his hand a tablet on which it is written « ERIS IN PESTE PATRONUS » (« You will be the patron of plague victims »).
At the bottom, we can see the plague victims seriously affected looking at Saint Roch.
